Andorra’s trails are perfect for walking, but it’s important to know what to do if a brown bear appears
Andorra has ceased to be that quiet destination for hikers who only had to worry about the slope or the lack of mobile coverage. This spring, three young brown bears have made an appearance in the Principality, reminding us that nature is not just selfies and panoramic views.
According to the Andorran Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Guillem Casal, these bears have been moving through usual incursion areas, and the Andorran banders corps has already shared recommendations for those who encounter them. So, in addition to sunscreen and proper boots, it might be wise to add a bit of common sense and patience if you see a bear on the horizon.
Must-do hiking routes in Andorra
Comapedrosa Trail
A classic that never fails: the path to Andorra’s highest peak, Comapedrosa (2,942 m). With views that will leave you breathless (literally, because the climb is no joke), it’s a route of approximately 4-5 hours round trip. It’s not uncommon to come across bear tracks in the higher areas, but don’t worry, these bears are shyer than Instagrammers in front of a viewpoint.
Tristaina Lakes itinerary
For those who prefer water landscapes and less elevation gain, this circular route around the glacial lakes is a pleasure for the senses. About 5 km and around 2 hours, it’s ideal for families and keeping an eye out for possible unexpected visits from wildlife.
Check out the interesting advice video edited by the Government of Andorra and the Brown Bear Foundation, published by the Andorran Banders Corps. These tips will be useful whether you are going to Andorra or hiking in trails of the Catalan Pyrenees, where the presence of bears is also starting to increase.
Where to stay after a hike with ‘unexpected company’
Hotels, charming rural houses, and bordes
Andorra offers a surprising range of accommodations combining comfort and authenticity. From rural houses in the Ordino valley to boutique hotels in the capital, you will find places to regain your strength and, who knows, maybe feel like a local farmer for a night. You can also opt for bordes and rural houses in the truest high mountain style.
Mountain refuges
For the more adventurous, refuges like Illa or Amitges (see the guide on this page) are strategic points for two-stage hikes. Although they’re not luxury places, their simplicity and proximity to nature will remind you that the essential is invisible to the eyes... and to bears.
Gastronomy and precautions: eat well and be careful
Mountain menus worth trying
After a good hike, nothing beats a daily menu with typical Andorran dishes: trinxat, escudella, or artisanal cheeses. In Andorra la Vella and Escaldes you will find restaurants that combine tradition with a modern touch, to recharge without overdoing it.
How to act if you encounter a brown bear
The Andorran banders corps and the Andorran minister agree on basic recommendations: stay calm, don’t run, and walk away facing the animal without turning your back. Give space for the bear to flee and avoid loud noises—these are key to avoiding uncomfortable situations.
The reality is that these bears don’t look for conflict and usually move away when they sense human presence. So, more than fear, what’s needed is respect and a bit of humor when you tell at the restaurant table about that “bare” encounter with the bear.
Hiking, good food, and a bit of animal respect: the perfect combination to enjoy Andorra without unpleasant surprises. And if the bear appears, remember it’s not an influencer looking for a photo, but a mountain neighbor who deserves respect.
