Amposta will invest more than a million to bring Dentistry to the Ebre and Tarragona
Amposta prepares the implementation of the first university Dentistry studies in the Terres de l’Ebre and Camp de Tarragona regions. This new educational offer, previously nonexistent, will begin to become a reality with an investment of over one million euros in the Municipal Auditorium.
The City Council has recently approved the clauses to grant the administrative concession that will facilitate the expansion of this facility, a key step so that interested universities can present their proposals.
What changes for Amposta and its inhabitants?
How will the new Dentistry program benefit students and the city?
The Dentistry studies in Amposta will open the door to around forty more students, expanding the local university offer and preventing young people from having to move to other cities to study this degree.
Moreover, the Auditorium, located at Sebastià Juan Arbó street, number 1, will become a larger and modernized university center, an economic and educational boost for the city and the region.
What investment is planned and what does it imply for the City Council?
The concession foresees an investment of more than one million euros to adapt and expand the Auditorium. The annual fee will be about 71,000 euros, which will be offset during the first 20 years with the works carried out.
Once the expansion is completed, this investment will directly revert to municipal heritage, improving local infrastructure without losing public value.
What are the administrative details and the context of the decision?
What conditions has the City Council approved for the concession?
The approved file regulates an administrative situation that had caused controversy since the 2011 agreement signed by CiU. This regularization is key to advancing with legal certainty.
The agreement allows public or private universities to submit offers to manage the space, which until now houses the Physiotherapy and Physical Activity and Sports Science studies of the private university Euses.
What has been the local political response to the project?
The file was approved with the support of Esquerra, the abstention of Junts per Amposta and the non-attached councilors, but with the vote against Som Amposta, showing some internal debate about the project.
The initial forecast to start Dentistry studies for the 2026/27 academic year remains with the intention that the new offer will be available in the immediate following years.
How does this project relate to other aids and investments in Amposta?
What subsidies has Amposta received to face other challenges?
Recently, the City Council has received 310,000 euros in subsidies from the Tarragona Provincial Council and the Spanish State to reinforce ordinary expenses and repair damage from the 2025 floods.
The aids include 132,000 euros for current expenses, 60,000 euros to improve the decontamination system, and 120,000 euros for sewer and public road repairs.
What is the relationship between this investment and local development?
These subsidies complement the university project, showing a municipality in motion that seeks to guarantee basic services and increase the educational offer to retain talent and support its own economy.
The development of the Auditorium as a university center is one more piece in a scenario of multiple investments marking a more solid future for Amposta.
Amposta moves forward decisively to become the first city in the Ebre and Camp de Tarragona to offer university Dentistry studies. This decision not only expands the educational offer but also involves an investment that will transform the Municipal Auditorium and directly impact the local community. The integration of these studies signifies a qualitative leap for the city, adding a new attraction hub for students and professionals. With this commitment, Amposta not only creates concrete opportunities but also positions itself as an educational reference in the region.
