A castle that is a town and a town that is heritage

Castellar is divided into two nuclei: the old one, which lives inside the walls of the Castle of Castellar, and the new one, created in 1971. The old part is the jewel of the town: a 13th-century Arab castle declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with an irregular structure and defenses such as towers and barbicans that still captivate.

The white streets, hidden squares, and the Tower of the Homage surround the daily life of the residents, who still maintain their essence despite the tourist appeal. The Baroque Church of the Divine Savior and the Palace of the Marquis of Moscoso are must-see visits.

A viewpoint with history and legend

Additionally, the town offers the famous "lovers’ balcony," a viewpoint with privileged views of the Bay of Algeciras and the Rock of Gibraltar. Here, they say, two young people swore eternal love in a story that does not end well, an Andalusian Romeo and Juliet that adds a dramatic touch to the charm of the place.

This combination of historic spaces and spectacular landscapes makes Castellar one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, according to the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of the country.

From Cádiz Tourism, they take us on a tour of the municipality of Castellar de la Frontera. Surely you will want to go there immediately.

Where to eat and where to stay

Local gastronomy

The Campo de Gibraltar is a territory with fishing roots, so fresh fish is the star. In Castellar and surroundings, don’t miss a good brothy rice or the classic Andalusian fried seafood, accompanied by a local wine or a refreshing rebujito.

Local restaurants combine tradition with modern touches, and you will find some establishments with terraces offering spectacular views to complete your dinner.

Charming accommodation

If you want to stay overnight, New Castellar offers rural houses and small charming hotels, ideal for a quiet getaway. You can also choose accommodations in Algeciras or Tarifa, 30 minutes by car, if you prefer to be closer to the coast.

For those seeking a different experience, there are some lodging options with direct views of the castle and the old town, to feel part of history.

Castellar de la Frontera is proof that history is not always found in books or museums, but can be lived every day, among cobblestone streets and views that leave you speechless.
