Spain sets rules: license renewal every 5 years for seniors
Have you noticed that your driver's license doesn't always last the same amount of time? Well, it’s not a coincidence. In Spain, the DGT has set a very clear limit for drivers depending on their year of birth.
If you were born before 1961, your license has become a bit like that car that needs more visits to the workshop: you have to renew it more often. But why?
Renewal regulations according to age
Renewal every 10 years before 65
For drivers under 65, the usual renewal period for AM, A1, A2, A and B licenses (that is, motorcycles and cars) is every 10 years. A little peace of mind for most, right?
Shorter terms after 65
But from 65 onwards, things change: driving licenses for light vehicles must be renewed every five years, while professional truck and bus licenses even more often, every 3 years. This measure aims to guarantee safety in light of physical and sensory deterioration.
Medical check-ups and examinations
Psychotechnical test without theoretical or practical exams
Older drivers will not have to take theoretical or practical tests again, but they will have to undergo a medical check-up at authorized centers. This way the DGT ensures that capacities remain in good condition.
Possible reductions in renewal period
If the doctor detects problems such as cataracts, diabetes or heart diseases, he or she may reduce the license validity to 3, 2 or even one year, to ensure closer monitoring. Safety doesn’t forgive, nor does the regulation.
Advantages and obligations for older drivers
Free renewal from 70 years old
A bit of good news: from 70 years old, license renewal is free, except for the cost of the medical check-up. There is no need to wait for it to expire; the process can be started up to three months before.
Special protection for elderly pedestrians
The regulation also requires other users to take special precautions with older drivers, recognizing that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
The reality is that, although it may seem like bureaucratic hassle, these rules aim to help the elderly maintain control and safety behind the wheel, without unpleasant surprises. And you, do you already know when it’s time to renew your license?
