Rosa Maria Marcé Recasens already sets the rhythm of Catalan chemistry from Tarragona. Her election as president of the Catalan Society of Chemistry (SCQ) is much more than a leadership change: it is a declaration of intent to enhance science in the region.

The new board of directors, announced on April 28, is headed by this professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), who previously served as vice president and board member of the organization. The Catalan Countries now have a voice with deeply rooted Tarragonian origins.

Profile of Rosa Maria Marcé and her impact in Tarragona

Who is the new president?

Doctor of Chemical Sciences from the University of Barcelona, Rosa Maria Marcé is part of the faculty of the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at URV. She actively participates in the CROMA research group, specialized in the analysis of organic contaminants in environmental samples. Thus, she not only talks about chemistry but also puts it at the service of the planet and public health.

The research that makes Tarragona shine

Marcé works with state-of-the-art techniques, such as chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, to detect even the smallest traces of contamination. And not only that: she develops new materials to improve extraction processes, a key piece to obtain more precise and reliable results.

The Catalan Society of Chemistry: a stimulus for local science

What is the SCQ and why does it matter to Tarragona?

The SCQ brings together chemists from the Catalan Countries and is part of the Institute of Catalan Studies. Its mission is clear: to represent the chemical community at the European level and to promote scientific vocations. Its activity has a direct echo in Tarragona, where the URV Faculty of Chemistry promotes important training and scientific initiatives together with the SCQ.

Activities that connect the city with chemistry

In Tarragona, collaboration with the SCQ results in events such as the Green Chemistry Conferences or the Meeting of Young People from the Catalan Countries. Final degree projects are also recognized with awards, and scientific meetings are organized that put the city on the map of chemical research.

Teaching and leadership: the Marcé mark in chemical education

A teaching career with impact

The new president has taught classes in various degrees at URV, from Chemistry to Biotechnology and Enology. She has also coordinated the interuniversity master’s degree in Applied Chromatographic Techniques, which unites URV, Jaume I University, and the University of Girona. Her footprint in training new scientists is unstoppable.

Thesis direction and promotion of new research

Marcé has supervised a considerable number of doctoral theses, especially in the field of environmental analysis and chromatographic techniques. This work not only strengthens the local scientific community but also positions Tarragona as a reference point in chemical research.

The URV Faculty of Chemistry celebrates this new phase and trusts that the new board of directors will successfully lead the promotion and development of chemistry in the Catalan Countries.

Because, in the end, chemistry is not only done in laboratories, but also in the way it connects with society. And Tarragona now has a president who knows this very well.
