The school environments of Reus are about to change from top to bottom. The city is preparing a plan to turn them into safe, healthy spaces designed for children and families.

The Reus City Council has awarded the drafting of the School Environments Master Plan to the company Territoris XML SA, for 38,123.47 euros including VAT, a key step to lay the foundations for the transformation of local educational centers.

What does the master plan mean for school environments?

Transforming streets and public spaces

It is about calming traffic around schools. Fewer lanes, lower vehicle speeds, and less noise are some of the planned measures. The idea is for schools to stop being points of stress and danger and become zones of coexistence.

Likewise, the aim is to improve visibility at school entrances and expand resting areas, with more greenery and street furniture. Play and rest areas designed for people, especially for children who spend hours there.

Addressing air quality and climate criteria

The plan not only looks at mobility but also incorporates fundamental environmental aspects. Air quality and the temperature of spaces are key to creating healthy, cooler, and more pleasant environments.

Including green zones and reducing noise pollution are essential parts to ensure that the school environment is a place not only to study but also to care for the users’ well-being.

How will the analysis be done and which schools will it affect?

Detailed diagnosis of centers and environments

The document will include the analysis of nursery schools, primary schools, and high schools. The goal is to understand the current condition of each center and prioritize actions according to local needs and urgencies.

This snapshot will serve to establish a roadmap that will guide future investments and projects in the city.

A cross-cutting vision for the city and children

The plan addresses school environments as part of a larger urban strategy. It does not only consider playgrounds but the immediate surroundings and influence areas that should be spaces for children and families.

The objective is to recover the city from the children’s perspective, defining spaces that contribute to neighborhood regeneration and care for the youngest.

Impact and expectations of the master plan

Central objectives and tools for child health

The plan does not want to be just a technical document. It aims to provide knowledge and tools to redesign school spaces with health and child development as core focuses.

The idea is to ensure that the environments are places for recreation, gathering, and care, with a comprehensive perspective that connects urban planning and well-being.

Immediate future: investments and urban renewal

The plan’s proposals will need to be considered in municipal investments made in the coming years. The transformation of school environments will be a key element for urban improvement in Reus.

If all goes as planned, the city will see streets becoming friendlier, noises disappearing, and children reclaiming public spaces.

The reality is that it remains to be seen whether the plan will translate into actions rather than just nice reports.
