The Government strengthens the research of the Ebro Observatory
When a century-old institution changes course, it is no coincidence. The Ebre Observatory, with over 120 years of history, has just seen its government place itself at the direct service of research and the university.
The Government has decided that the Department of Research and Universities will take over control and the presidency of the Board of Trustees of the Observatory Foundation. A step that aims to put science at the forefront, but that also changes the rules of the game in a key center for meteorology and geophysics.
The leadership change shaking the Observatory
The Research department takes the reins
From now on, the Generalitat will relate to the Observatory through the Department of Research and Universities, which will also chair the Board of Trustees. Núria Montserrat Pulido, minister of this department, assumes this key responsibility which involves managing and representing the Foundation.
New composition of the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees, which is the governing and administrative body, will also see its composition strengthened. In addition to the Department of Research, it includes the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia, the Secretariat of Ecological Transition, the Spanish National Research Council, the Tarragona Provincial Council, the National Geographic Institute, the municipalities of Roquetes and Tortosa, and the State Meteorological Agency.
The Ebre Observatory, a scientific benchmark that never stops
More than a century of expertise
Founded in 1904 by the Society of Jesus in Roquetes, the Observatory combines scientific observation with advanced research and outreach. It is a pioneer in the study of meteorology, geophysics, and geodesy, and maintains a direct relationship with Ramon Llull University and the CSIC.
Outreach and access to information
The center stands out for its educational work and the publication of scientific papers, as well as managing databases that facilitate public access to its studies. This positions it as a university institute with a clear mission: to take science beyond the laboratories.
The strategic value of research for the territory
A boost for local research
This statutory modification not only strengthens the Observatory but also involves a greater commitment to research applied to the territory, especially in areas such as ecological transition and climate change.
Collaboration with key institutions
The presence of multiple public and scientific entities on the Board of Trustees evidences that the Observatory positions itself as a central actor in the coordination of research projects at the Catalan and state level.
With this new structure, the Ebre Observatory not only maintains its century-old trajectory, but also looks sideways toward the future, with scientific research as its main engine.
Institutional movements often hide more than a simple reorganization. Here, what is moving is the will to put science at the forefront without losing the local root.
