Coma-ruga prepares a 3,500 m³ rainwater tank to prevent recurring floods
El Vendrell will build a 3,500 cubic meter stormwater reservoir under the Enamorats Park in Coma-ruga. This infrastructure aims to prevent floods like those of last weekend, which especially affected the Brisamar urbanization.
Mayor Kenneth Martínez explained that the area has historic drainage problems and that the project seeks to adapt to climate changes that intensify rainfall episodes.
Project Details and Location
What Capacity and Dimensions Will the Reservoir Have?
The reservoir will have a capacity of 3,500 cubic meters, with dimensions of 20x40 meters at the base and 12 meters deep. This capacity is equivalent to the volume of six Olympic swimming pools or the water consumption of four days of the Coma-ruga nucleus.
Why Is It Built Under Enamorats Park?
Enamorats Park, located on Brisamar Avenue, is the chosen site due to the lack of natural slope and its sea-level elevation, which hinders the current surface drainage of the area.
Consequences of the Lack of Drainage in Brisamar
What Problems Does the Current Situation Cause in Brisamar?
The Brisamar urbanization, built in the 1940s over former wetlands, lacks a stormwater network and relies on surface drainage. This causes water accumulation in the streets and delays in evacuation to the sea during intense rainfall episodes.
How Has the Area Been Affected in Recent Events?
Last Saturday, Brisamar was the most affected area by the downpours, with damage to vehicles, garages, and ground floors due to the insufficiency of current systems and the limited channelling of highway N-340 towards the beach.
Budget, Approval, and Political Controversy
When Is the Project Expected to Be Approved and What Will Be the Cost?
The city council will convene a municipal plenary session in September to approve the budget allocation, with an estimated cost of over 4 million euros, and then validate the executive project to begin construction.
What Criticism Has the Municipal Government Received?
Unitat Vendrellenca has criticized the PSC for not having carried out the announced construction of the Brisamar collector and for problems with the pumps of the Sant Salvador stormwater reservoir, completed in 2007 but with questioned functionality.
