The most photographed bridge in Ronda has a downside that many tourists overlook
A bridge that looks like a vertical wall and defies the rules of architecture. Want to know why it is so special in Ronda?
Ronda hides a bridge that leaves no one indifferent. It is not just a bridge, it is a stone wall that defies gravity and common sense. A vertigo that connects two sides of a city with a tragicomic history and an enchanting aesthetic.
Located in the province of Málaga, in southern Spain, this bridge has marked the city since the 18th century and experts and tourists alike keep talking about it. But what makes it so special? And why are some engineers not quite convinced?
The new bridge of Ronda: a vertical whim that defies logic
History and construction
The new bridge of Ronda was built over the ruins of a first bridge that collapsed after only six years, causing a tragedy with 50 fatalities. The second bridge, with a 15-meter arch and 100 meters in height, looks more like a wall than a conventional bridge. This enormous stone wall connects the two parts of the town, separated by the Guadalevín River, and rivals in height with many spires of European cathedrals.
Why it is considered a bad bridge according to experts
Despite its beauty, many engineers consider that the bridge does not meet the adequate criteria for a construction of these characteristics. Its massive and opaque design prevents the freedom of the river’s flow, a mistake according to the history of bridge construction which favors lighter and more transparent structures. Still, we hope that if floods ever come, the monumental 233-year-old bridge will withstand many more.
