A banner with the colors of the rainbow has taken center stage this morning on the balcony of the Reus City Hall. The striking image breaks the normality and reminds us that the fight against LGBTI-phobia is more necessary than ever.

It is the symbolic gesture accompanying the International Day Against LGBTI-phobia, celebrated on May 17, and that the Reus City Hall has wanted to highlight with conviction and commitment.

The banner and the fight against LGBTI-phobia in Reus

A balcony that speaks

The banner with the colors of the rainbow, symbol of sexual and gender diversity, was hung on the City Hall balcony this Friday, May 15, and will remain there until early Monday. This action, promoted by the Equality area of the Department of Services for People and Social Rights, aims to make visible the need for respect and tolerance.

The reading of the institutional manifesto against LGBTI-phobia by Elisabeth Altayó Martí, secretary of the H2O entity, reinforced this message denouncing the attacks and discrimination that the community still suffers. The same manifesto was later read in the Municipal Council.

Visibility beyond the banner

This is not the only action: on Monday, May 25, municipal crews will paint a bench with the colors of the LGBTI flag in the Fortuny neighborhood, near the Puigcerver school. This initiative, arising from the students and the school council of the center, seeks to create a visible space of awareness and respect.

The free event is much more than a contest: it is a space to empower youth, make diversity visible, and fight against discriminations still present.

Institutional commitment and ongoing support

Institutional manifesto 2026

This year’s manifesto recalls the key decision by the WHO in 1990 that removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, and warns that persecution and discrimination still persist in many countries. It also denounces the increase in hate speech and reaffirms Catalonia’s commitment to equality and non-discrimination.

It calls for inclusive public policies and an education respectful of diversity, as well as the memory of LGBTI people who have suffered persecution and social exclusion.

The service is part of the LGBTI SAI Network of Catalonia, strengthening specialized care and support for those in need.
