Reus improves the Carrilet connection with more green spaces and housing
Demolish to connect. This is the idea that has driven the Reus City Council with a project that will transform Carrilet Avenue and the way the neighborhood connects to the center. A change that not only opens the way but also plants trees and creates playgrounds.
The residents have long awaited a smoother connection and public spaces that are more than just asphalt. Now, with the demolition of old buildings and the urbanization of the lot, the city takes a further step towards a friendlier and more accessible environment.
An urban space that connects and breathes
What will the demolitions be used for?
The City Council has initially approved the demolition of three buildings located between Balmes Street 30, 32, and 34. This action will open an urban space that will allow Carrilet Avenue to connect directly with the center of Reus. The planned urbanization includes the installation of a children’s play pyramid and the planting of trees that will provide shade and coolness.
What will the new public space be like?
The ground will be paved combining different textures such as gravel, exposed concrete, and cobblestone, maintaining the visual continuity of the existing sidewalk to ensure a functional unity that leaves no room for doubt. With an execution period of five months and a budget of about 440,000 euros, this space is born to make the city more accessible and less fragmented.
Affordable housing to retain residents
Demolish to create social housing
At the same time, the demolition of the warehouse located at number 16 Carrilet Avenue has also been approved. This lot will be transferred to the Generalitat for the construction of about 40 affordable homes, within the framework of the Pla 50.000, a key initiative to prevent Reus from losing population and to guarantee access to decent housing.
Timelines and budget of the residential project
The works will last two months from the signing of the contract, with a budget close to 400,000 euros. This action is part of the local and regional administration’s intention to respond to the demand for affordable housing that the free market does not cover.
Social and urban impact of the transformation
A more permeable and green neighborhood
With these moves, Carrilet Avenue will stop being a barrier and will become an axis that connects and unifies. The presence of green spaces and playgrounds is not just an aesthetic whim but a clear commitment to a city designed for people and not for cars.
Objectives of the 2023-2027 Municipal Action Plan
The project aligns with municipal priorities seeking sustainability, accessibility, and a better quality of life. The continuity of the pavement, the planting of trees, and the creation of safe spaces reflect these strategic lines, which place the resident at the center of urban planning.
| Action | Budget (VAT included) | Estimated duration | Main objective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demolition Balmes Street 30-34 | €439,054.04 | 5 months | Improve connectivity and create green spaces |
| Demolition Carrilet Avenue 16 | €400,495.79 | 2 months | Affordable housing for 40 households |
Reus not only moves but transforms and prepares for a future where neighborhoods connect better and where living is not an inaccessible luxury.
