Amposta will invest 1.2 MEUR in sports, mobility, and urban services
Amposta will allocate more than one million euros from its surplus to projects that directly affect the daily life of the citizens. The funds will be focused on sports, mobility, and urban services, with a clear commitment to reducing municipal debt while progressing on pending works.
The municipal council meeting on May 25, 2026, approved a credit modification that incorporates 1,253,000 euros from the surplus into the investment budget, a decision supported by Esquerra and with the abstention of the other groups. According to Mayor Adam Tomàs, this will allow the reduction of the forecasted municipal loan and the launch of key actions for the city.
Investments in sports that cannot wait
Renovation of the athletics track and football field
One of the highlights of the investment is the modernization of sports facilities. Amposta will allocate 135,000 euros to renovate the tartan and lighting of the athletics track, as part of a global project of 450,000 euros. Regarding the football field, the turf will be replaced and the lights improved, with a contribution of 129,300 euros from the surplus within a total project of 431,000 euros.
Support for sports activity and parallel plans
These actions are part of a Shock Plan by the Generalitat and aim not only to improve the facilities but also to boost sports practice in the city. A boost that arrives at a time when clubs and users had long awaited these improvements.
Mobility and public space: cycling at the center
The Eurovelo 8 project underway
The main protagonist in mobility is the second phase of Eurovelo 8, a cycling axis that connects and improves the road bike network from Freginals. The planned investment is 600,000 euros, this being the largest allocation within the investment package. The first phase, managed by COPATE, has just been completed and has already opened the way for this second stage.
Improvements in public space and underground services
Underground, the municipality will continue renewing the sewer network with an additional 350,000 euros, an ongoing program that seeks to avoid problems and improve service quality. Additionally, 36,000 euros will be allocated to adapt municipal floats according to current safety regulations.
Debt reduction and responsible management
Less loan, more investment
Thanks to the extraordinary authorization from the Department of Economy and Finance, Amposta can replace part of the forecasted municipal loan of 4 million euros with surplus resources, leaving the final debt at around 3.5 million euros. This decision allows progress with the Neighborhoods and Towns Plan without increasing the city’s financial burden.
Other council matters and related measures
During the session, other issues were also addressed such as the average payment period and delinquency for the first quarter of 2026, as well as the approval of local holidays for 2027, which will be May 17 and December 7.
The reality is that Amposta spends the surplus on making visible things, not on numbers only seen by accountants.
