Amposta saves 1.6 million in 9 years thanks to energy efficiency
Amposta has managed to save 1.6 million euros in energy consumption over the last 9 years, a relief that eases the municipal coffers amid an energy price crisis.
The key? A firm commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energy that has transformed the city from top to bottom, driven by investments and overcoming a historic bill.

The public lighting renovation that changed the bill
A million-euro project with European support
In July 2016, Amposta launched a project worth more than 3.3 million euros to replace conventional lighting with LED technology.
This transformation, divided into six phases, was supported by the European FEDER fund, which contributed 1.25 million euros. This allowed Amposta to modernize the lighting of the entire city and isolated neighborhoods, with a direct impact on the energy bill.
Consumption cut in half
According to the study linked to European funding, the annual lighting consumption dropped from more than 2,500,000 kWh (2015-2018) to just 1,191,159 kWh in 2022, right when the project ended.
An enormous reduction that has not reversed, but has been maintained thanks to the continuity of the implemented measures.
Modernization and renewable energy in public facilities
Improvement of municipal facilities
The city has not only changed light bulbs. Electrical systems and municipal control panels have been modernized to optimize consumption.
This more rational management has turned old facilities into more sustainable and less costly-to-maintain spaces.
Biomass and solar panels to reduce the bill
The introduction of a biomass boiler and solar panels at municipal sports facilities has been another important step towards self-consumption and the reduction of traditional electric consumption.
These installations not only generate economic savings but also position Amposta as a benchmark in renewable energy in the province of Tarragona.
A project within the Municipal Action Plan with local impact
LED as a core axis of the Action Plan
The renovation and expansion of lighting with LED technology is part of point 11 of Amposta’s Municipal Action Plan (PAM), which prioritizes sustainability and efficiency.
This strategy organizes and gives meaning to all the actions, turning them into a roadmap with tangible results.
Repercussions in the province of Tarragona
The case of Amposta is a clear example of how a municipality in Tarragona can face the energy crisis with concrete and effective measures.
Its savings of 1.6 million euros not only relieve local accounts but also demonstrate that the combination of technology and renewables is the way forward for the entire region.
Residents can see how the bill goes down, even though the global energy network becomes more expensive.
The reality is that energy efficiency is not just a nice word on a sheet but money that stays at home.
