Mercadona lowers the price of 100 basic products: cheaper milk, oil, and potatoes
Mercadona has decided to hit the wallets of its suppliers to ease those of consumers. This discount affects hundreds of basic products such as milk, oil, and potatoes, with discounts reaching up to 8%.
The chain chaired by Juan Roig is making this move in a context of inflation and rising energy costs, seeking to curb the loss of purchasing power of Spanish families.
Discounts on key shopping products
Lower prices on milk, oil, and potatoes
Store-brand milk receives the largest adjustment. The liter can now be found between 0.82 and 1.03 euros, depending on whether it is whole, semi-skimmed, or lactose-free.
As for oil, sunflower oil falls to 1.66 euros per liter, while mild olive oil is around 3.95 euros. And potatoes are not exempt: the five-kilogram mesh drops from 6.15 to 5.60 euros.
Other discounted products
But the discount does not end here. Prices have also been cut on yogurts, cookies, crushed tomato, eggs, rice, coffee, and cheeses. Even beef and hamburgers, as well as fresh fruits like strawberries and artichokes, are part of the package.
This means that Mercadona wants to ensure that the majority of the shopping cart is more affordable for everyone.
Economic context behind the decision
International pressures and inflation
Inflation and rising energy costs have made life more expensive for households. Geopolitical tensions have also added more pressure on food prices.
In this scenario, Mercadona has taken advantage of a drop in costs at the source to pass it directly on to the consumer.
Mercadona’s strategy to compete
With this action, the chain seeks to strengthen its competitiveness, especially when price has become a key factor in deciding where to shop.
The measure could pressure other chains to follow the same path, generating a price war beneficial for families.
Impact and reactions in the sector
Market response and trends
Mercadona leads a trend already observed after months of significant increases: lowering prices to recover purchasing power.
This strategy may shake up the market and force competitors to adjust their rates.
Fresh and processed products on the rise
The discount affects both fresh products like strawberries and artichokes, as well as processed ones like chocolate or hamburgers. This variety broadens the direct impact on the family shopping basket.
But, as always, the big question is: will this price war be sustainable or just a pause?
Mercadona has moved pawns that will make pieces move across the entire shopping board.
