Imagine a small car that takes electric mobility very seriously, but doesn’t give up on carrying the technology of its bigger siblings. This is exactly what BYD does with its Dolphin Surf, known as Seagull in China, which has just unveiled an update that leaves behind its initial modesty.

But it’s not all just appearance or catalog numbers. The real battle is on the road and, above all, in the price war shaking the Chinese electric urban sector, where competitors like Wuling or Geely are not intimidated. And BYD, which doesn’t like to fall behind, has raised the stakes.

BYD Dolphin Surf 2026: a huge leap in range and technology

Range that gets people talking

The updated version of the Dolphin Surf will now homologate up to 505 km of range according to the CLTC cycle, which means an increase of almost 100 km compared to the previous model. Keep in mind that in Spain, the longest-range version doesn’t exceed 322 km homologated, so we might finally see a Chinese compact car approaching 400 km according to WLTP standards.

To manage this jump, BYD has reinforced the motor up to 60 kW (80 hp), an increase over the previous 55 kW, and optimized battery efficiency. All this without losing its compact and urban essence: 3.99 meters long and 2.5 meters wheelbase to move around the city effortlessly.

LiDAR and assistants that surprise in an entry-level model

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that BYD introduces for the first time at this price level an integrated LiDAR sensor, combined with the powerful Nvidia Drive Orin chip, enabling a driving assistance system called "God's Eye B" or DiPilot 300. With this, the car can perform semi-autonomous driving in urban environments and highways, as well as automated parking.

Inside, not much changes, but details like a redesigned steering wheel, buttons matching the interior, and a 50W mobile charger with its own ventilation stand out, designed to avoid overheating during fast charging. The central rotating screen remains the star, now with a smoother and more attractive digital ecosystem.

The impact of the new BYD Dolphin Surf on the global market

A technological urban warrior

With over one million units sold since 2023, the Dolphin Surf/Seagull has established itself as BYD’s spearhead, especially for conquering European and Latin American markets. All this despite maintaining the first-generation Blade battery, which allows recovering from 30% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes.

The new color palette includes an intense red that does not go unnoticed, and the set of improvements puts the model in direct competition with rivals that until now had gained market share in the electric compact segment.

A price that still hurts the competition

Although BYD has not officially confirmed the price of this ultra-technological version, it is expected that the most complete and longer-range configurations may see a slight increase. Right now, the cheapest Dolphin Surf can be found for under 20,000 euros, while the better-equipped versions approach 25,000 euros with offers and discounts.

When will the Seagull with LiDAR arrive in Spain?

The road to European roads

The current version of the Dolphin Surf has already had notable success in Spain, thanks to a very attractive quality-price ratio. The 2026 update, with all this technology and increased range, is expected to reach Spanish dealerships in early 2027.

However, there is still no confirmation about final prices or the concrete availability of the LiDAR-equipped versions. But if you are one of those who think an electric compact car can be more than just an entry-level vehicle, this new BYD bet will surely turn your head.

The challenge of competing with the big players

With this move, BYD shows it wants not only to compete on price but also on technology. LiDAR, until now reserved for premium models, makes a leap to more affordable cars, putting pressure on traditional manufacturers who have not yet dared to offer these options in lower segments.

According to a BYD manager in Spain, the intention is clear: "to offer future technology at an affordable price, because electric mobility must be for everyone". And from what it seems, it’s not just a phrase.

The reality is that the BYD Dolphin Surf 2026 has become a proposal that shakes up the market and paves the way for advanced technology to reach the most popular models, which gives the competition a serious scare. And you, have you already decided what your next electric car will be?
