Must-see coves to discover in Tarragona... and enjoy

Coastal itinerary from l’Ametlla de Mar

Starting at l’Ametlla de Mar, you will find coves such as Cala del Illot, Cala de l’Àliga, and Cala Xelin, a succession of natural spots where the sea mixes with cliffs and pines. These coves are ideal for those looking for tranquility and a swim with few people around.

A little further up, Cala del Torrent del Pi and Cala Mosques offer a slightly wilder landscape but are equally accessible with clear signs.

Lesser-known and curious spots of the Costa Daurada

If you go a bit further away, you must visit the Bosc de la Marquesa, a natural environment that combines trails and views of the Mediterranean Sea. There is also Cala Waikiki, a place that looks like it came out of a postcard due to its combination of crystal-clear water and vegetation.

Next to the famous Castle of Tamarit, Cala Jovera is a small paradise for those who want to combine history and nature without having to travel many kilometers.

How to get there and what to do near the coves

Access and transportation

Most of these coves are accessible by car from Tarragona or Reus in less than an hour. From Tarragona city, the C-42 and N-340 are the most common routes to reach l’Ametlla de Mar and nearby areas.

For those who prefer public transport, there are intercity buses connecting coastal towns with the Tarragona capital, although to explore more hidden coves, a car or bicycle is almost essential.

Activities and local tourism

Besides swimming and the beach, these areas offer hiking, snorkeling, and cultural visits to local heritage such as the Castle of Tamarit or Bosc de la Marquesa, with marked routes that allow discovering Mediterranean flora and fauna.

Photography lovers will find a perfect setting in these coves and forests to capture the lights of the Costa Daurada and the combination of textures between rock, sea, and vegetation.

Where to eat and sleep to fully enjoy the experience

Local cuisine near the coast

If you feel like tasting seafood cuisine, the restaurants in l’Ametlla de Mar are known for their seafood paella and fresh fish dishes. Daily menus are usually an affordable option with locally sourced products.

You can also try romesco, a typical sauce that accompanies many dishes in the area and is found on most local menus.

Accommodations for all tastes

Regarding lodging, Tarragona and its surroundings offer a variety of campgrounds, hotels, and rural houses. Campgrounds near l’Ametlla are a very popular option for those who want to be in direct contact with nature and enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere.

For those who prefer more comfort, there are boutique hotels in Tarragona itself and in coastal towns like Calafell or Cambrils, with sea views and full services.

Remember that all these natural areas are fragile, so respect the environment and leave everything as you liked to find it.

The reality is that the province of Tarragona is full of coves just waiting for your visit, and you don’t have to go far to feel in a place almost untouched and spectacular.

Anyway, from Modernet we also want to advise you to be cautious if you visit these small coves. First, because over-tourism is harmful to the natural ecosystem. Also, keep in mind that these small coves often lack basic services such as showers, trash bins, or even lifeguards.

If you must swim in these paradisiacal coves, to fully enjoy it and without mishaps, check the sea conditions and the flag flying on neighboring beaches. Never go too far into the sea. And above all, keep your belongings well guarded and help keep the natural environment clean and cared for.

Flying with Ryanair has always had an emotional gym aspect: weighing your backpack, checking in before you get hit with a fee, and hoping the zipper doesn’t bulge at the boarding gate.

The Spanish precedent shaking Ryanair and the United Kingdom

The ruling that shook the industry last year

The Salamanca court condemned Ryanair to refund 147 euros to a passenger for improper charges of hand luggage on five flights taken between 2019 and 2024. The court considered that hand luggage is an essential and indispensable element of air transport, therefore the amount must be reimbursed with interest.

This decision made headlines in the British newspaper The Telegraph, which highlighted that hand luggage fees could soon be banned. British lawyers saw the ruling as a possible turning point for the whole sector.

Impact and reactions in the United Kingdom

Although 147 euros may seem irrelevant for a multi-million airline, the debate over additional fees is breaking new ground. The British, who are used to hellish queues at check-in and Ryanair boarding chaos, are closely following the effects of this ruling which could set a trend across Europe.

Ryanair and the United Kingdom remove luggage fees to improve air travel and save passengers costs — Image generated by AI

Industry sources explain that, although the elimination of these fees does not guarantee savings for all travelers, it could mean an increase in base fares to offset lost revenues.

How this affects trips from the Camp de Tarragona

Flights and connections to the United Kingdom

Residents of Tarragona planning trips to the United Kingdom, especially London, may soon see changing conditions for air transport. The Reus Airport, with regular connections to British cities, could benefit from a clearer system with fewer surprises at boarding.

Although Ryanair dominates the route, other low-cost and regular airlines might follow the same path if the precedent spreads.

The Spanish factor changing the rules of the game

Why are the Spanish the protagonists?

The legal action that started in Salamanca has opened the door to a European debate on airline fees. It is unusual for a local ruling to have such an international impact, but Ryanair has been one of the most common targets of Spanish consumers.

The fact that the judge defined hand luggage as essential paves the way to reconsider abusive practices by some airlines, especially low-cost ones.

But here lies the interesting part: the mere fact that the British look toward Spain using the phrase “we have to thank the Spanish” is an unexpected point of pride on the map of European travel.

Ryanair changes the rules of the game: more free bag, less paper, and the law looking toward low-cost

The main news for passengers is that the free personal bag allowed in the cabin now has maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Previously, the usual limit was 40 x 25 x 20 cm, so the change gives a bit more room to that low-cost backpack that always seemed on the edge of failure.

But let’s not get romantic: it must fit under the seat in front. This is the detail that decides everything. If the bag sticks out, puffs up like a badly closed croissant, or ends up in the overhead compartment without having paid for priority, Ryanair may consider it no longer a personal bag but a billable declaration of intent.

Luggage type

Condition

Free personal bag

40 x 30 x 20 cm

Must go under the seat in front.

10 kg cabin suitcase

55 x 40 x 20 cm

Only with Priority & 2 Cabin Bags or equivalent fare.

Ryanair itself explains its luggage policy on its official website, where it reminds that all fares include a small personal bag, but any additional or larger piece must be purchased separately. Updated information can be found here: official Ryanair luggage policy.

The paper boarding pass is becoming a thing of the past

The other important change is the transition to a 100% digital boarding pass. Ryanair indicates that passengers must check in online and show the code from the official app. Translation for humans: a charged mobile phone is now as important as your ID.

The company assures that this system reduces costs, facilitates incident management, and eliminates paper. But it also requires a bit more care: battery, app installed, logged in, and pass downloaded. The typical “no coverage” scene at the boarding queue is officially banned for the sake of self-respect.

Ryanair also foresees practical exceptions: if the passenger checked in online but loses their phone, it turns off, or they don’t have a device, the company says they can receive assistance at the airport. Still, the message is clear: arriving without having completed check-in continues to be costly.

The legal front: Ryanair gains ground in courts

The most delicate part is legal. The Brussels Labour Court has upheld Ryanair's policy on cabin luggage and rejected claims that the airline is obliged to include a large overhead compartment suitcase within the basic ticket price. In short: the small bag under the seat yes; the overhead suitcase not necessarily free.

In Spain, the battle is not fully over. The multimillion-euro fines imposed on various low-cost airlines for practices such as charging for larger hand luggage or printing boarding passes have been suspended in some cases while appeals are resolved. In other words: there is a game, but Ryanair is currently playing with the wind in its favor.

For travelers, the conclusion is quite down-to-earth: before flying, you need to check sizes, fare, and check-in like someone checking if they turned off the gas. The new free bag gives a bit more margin, yes, but Ryanair remains Ryanair: an airline where every centimeter can have more consequences than a 6-euro coffee at the airport.

Benidorm wakes up with a theme park that leaves no one indifferent. Terra Mítica reopens its doors after months closed, but this season comes loaded with a big novelty that no visitor expected.

The Mediterranean leisure complex kicks off the season on May 15 with a schedule of 123 days full of action and shows. Official sources confirm that the five park areas will be fully operational from June 27, ready to offer a unique experience.

The new protagonists: the renovated Las Islas auditorium and its shows

🌡️ Climate: Spring and summer, 20-30ºC
✈️ How to get there: Alicante-Elche Airport, 50 km from Benidorm
📅 Best time to visit: May to September, to avoid crowds and enjoy the open park

An auditorium made to measure for the legend

The big star this season is the debut of a dedicated auditorium in the Las Islas area. This space has been designed to host "The Tournament," a show that for years has captivated thousands of visitors. Now, the Black Knight and his inseparable squire return bolder than ever, surrounded by an environment crafted to enhance every detail of the experience.

Productions that leave a mark

As if that were not enough, Terra Mítica goes big on large-scale productions. "Barbarroja, The Lost Treasure" is the flagship show performed daily in Iberia. And if you’re looking for a more family-friendly plan, "The Butterfly Circus" completes the artistic offer, held in the new Pandora auditorium.

Mechanical rides: adrenaline and fun for all

From extreme thrills to adventures for kids

More than thirty rides will be operational, combining high-intensity options like Titánide and Inferno with classics like the Nil Falls or the bumper cars Arietes. The little ones are not left behind thanks to adapted versions like Jabatos, guaranteeing fun and safety for the whole family.

A park for all ages and tastes

Terra Mítica has managed to maintain a balance between those seeking strong emotions and those who prefer more peaceful experiences. The variety of rides and shows makes any visit a pleasure, regardless of age or preference.

From the YouTube channel 'Jerez Coaster Adventures', which witnessed the park’s opening this year, they give us a taste of everything we will see and live at the mega park of Marina Baixa.

How to get there, where to eat and what to visit nearby

Easy access from Tarragona and the province

To get to Terra Mítica from Tarragona or the Tarragona region, the best option is to take the AP-7 highway southbound to exit 65 towards Benidorm. The trip takes approximately 3 hours by car. You can also opt for Alicante-Elche Airport, about 50 km away, with regular train or bus connections to Benidorm.

A "Modernet" tip: Take your time and you’ll get better prices on tickets. Buy tickets, choosing the options that suit you best, on the official Terra Mítica ticket sales website. Keep in mind that if you come by car, parking at the park will cost between 8 and 10 Euros per day.

Note to "modern" travelers: At the time of writing this article, we found the official theme park website down. We recommend visiting sites like Visit Benidorm for park information, or going to your nearest travel agency to get details about all attractions, schedules, and park conditions.

Gastronomy and accommodation to complete your visit

If hunger strikes after a day full of adrenaline, the Benidorm area offers everything from traditional restaurants with fresh fish dishes and rice, to tapas and local plates like the famous "clòtxina". For accommodation, there is a wide range: from family hotels to tourist apartments, ideal for resting before or after a day at the park.

If you’re looking for tickets + accommodation, on the Viajeros Piratas website you can find the offer that best suits you. You can also visit their official Facebook. Two hotels we recommend from Modernet are: Grand Luxor and the Four Points by Sheraton, two resorts next to the theme park with preferential access to Terra Mítica.

Terra Mítica is not just a park; it is a starting point to explore the Costa Blanca. Just a few kilometers away, you can visit the Serra Gelada, enjoy the beaches of El Arenal, or discover the historic center of Benidorm with its Mediterranean charm.

And if you take the CV-70 to the right of the theme park, you can venture into the interior of the Marina Baixa region and see mountain landscapes that are a complete contrast to the large coastal city, with postcard villages like La Nucia, Polop, Callosa d’en Sarrià, Bolulla, Tàrbena, the Castle of Guadalest...

With all this, the 2026 season at Terra Mítica promises to be more than just an amusement park: it is an invitation to live the adventure with all your senses wide awake.

Casablanca, 30 years old and a bicycle. Meryem Belkihel, known on Instagram as MeghyLost, embarked on an adventure that many consider crazy: 35,000 km by bike across Africa. And no, it’s not any tourist route.

For three years, she crossed 33 countries on the continent, from Marrakesh to South Africa, dodging storms, insecurities, and whatever else you can imagine. But what drove her to do it? And how has her view of Africa changed? Here you won’t find the typical story.

The journey that changed a life and a perspective

Meryem Belkihel is not just any cyclist. At only 30 years old, this young woman from Casablanca decided to do what many don’t even dare to think about: cross Africa by bicycle. 35,000 kilometers pedaling through 33 countries, never returning home for three years. Her route had not only a sporting goal but also to break stereotypes and show the real Africa.

During her journey she faced scorching deserts, dusty roads, torrential rains, and difficult political contexts. But her motivation was not only to overcome physical obstacles: she wanted to highlight the role of African women and denounce the effects of climate change in different regions.

How to get to Casablanca, starting point

If you want to know the city that saw Meryem depart, getting there is easy from Camp de Tarragona. You can take a low-cost flight with a stopover in Barcelona or Madrid to Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, which is about 30 minutes from the city center. You also have the option of the train from Rabat or Tangier if you want a slower route through Morocco. In Casablanca, don’t miss the seafront where Meryem was interviewed, with views of the imposing Hassan II Mosque and El Hank lighthouse.

Gastronomy and accommodation in Casablanca

After the journey, you will surely want to taste the local cuisine. In the waterfront area, there are several restaurants offering fresh seafood and typical dishes such as tajine. For lodging, there are everything from budget guesthouses to modern hotels like the Kenzi Tower Hotel, which offers impressive views of the city.

Debunking myths: Africa is not a country

Meryem wanted her experience to serve to break the simplistic and often wrong vision of Africa. Many people think it is a single country full of conflicts and poverty, an idea she completely rejects.

Throughout the journey, she discovered cities with advanced digital systems, dynamic economies, and safe regions despite the political instability of certain countries. For example, she experienced protests in Senegal and Mozambique but also walked through quiet and modern neighborhoods.

How to get around Africa by bike and visas

Crossing so many countries by bike is not only a physical matter but also a bureaucratic one. Visas are a headache, especially for African citizens. Meryem highlights that visa costs can exceed 300 euros and that often Europeans enter more easily than Africans, a paradox that exposes the inequalities on the continent.

Tips for exploring Africa from Camp de Tarragona

Plan your documentation well according to the country.

Check local security on official websites before traveling.

Consider combined trips with flights and local transport to save time.

A journey with soul: the voice of African women

For Meryem, the journey is also a declaration of intent: to show that African women can achieve great things. Her website and social networks became an open travel diary, where she shared experiences, challenges, and unique moments.

In addition, she wanted to strengthen the link between Marrakech and the rest of Africa, reminding that people share values such as hospitality and generosity. Her critical perspective also questions the dominant narratives in Europe and Morocco, where prejudices about the continent still persist.

Visiting Casablanca and surroundings after the route

Once in Casablanca, take the opportunity to make a getaway to places like El Jadida or Rabat, cities full of history and good food. Don’t miss trying a good mint tea on Boulevard Mohamed V or on Atlantic Ocean Boulevard and tasting a good plate of couscous.

Recommended accommodation and gastronomy

If you are looking for a place to stay after Meryem’s route, try a traditional riad in Casablanca or a boutique hotel in Rabat. On the table, authentic Moroccan cuisine stands out with dishes like harira or sweet pastries.

The reality is that this journey was not only a physical route but a brave exercise to question stereotypes and show the diverse Africa that many do not know. If you dare to follow Meryem’s steps, prepare for an experience that goes beyond what you imagine.

For more information about traveling to Africa and practical advice, you can consult good specialized agencies like Altaïr Viatges or Watatu Travel.

What happens when a yacht is not just any yacht? When it has 168 meters in length, capacity for 142 passengers, and a submarine that reaches 300 meters deep? This reality has arrived in Getxo these days. And the story does not end here.

The 'Scenic Eclipse' is not just a vessel; it is a floating hotel with 114 luxury suites and a design tailor-made by the Basque company Oliver Design. But its presence at the Bilbao Abra is much more than just an illustrious visitor.

A super-luxury yacht with submarine and local design

Features that capture attention

The 'Scenic Eclipse' is a giant that not only stands out, since 2019, for its size. With a reinforced hull to cross the Arctic and Antarctic ice, this yacht features two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters and a submarine for eight people to explore the seabed at 300 meters. A true underwater adventure with corals and marine fauna, and with activities like kayaking or diving among its services. Its improved version is the 'Scenic Eclipse', which is chartered in 2023.

Design and construction in Getxo

The architectural project came from the hands of Oliver Design, a Basque company based in Getxo. The vessel, built in 2019, began its first crossing between Istanbul and Venice but is designed to challenge the most extreme conditions. With a speed of 17 knots and a weight of 17,085 tons, the 'Scenic Eclipse' is a showcase of technology and luxury.

The luxury cruise experience and exclusive services

Suites and six-star comforts

Talking about 114 double suites with private balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows already marks another dimension. From the 32 m² Verandah Suite to the 232 m² Owner Suite, service includes a 24-hour butler for each passenger. The pools, a 550 m² spa, cinema rooms, and up to 10 fine dining restaurants —French, Italian, and Asian— are part of the daily ritual onboard.

Prices and dream routes

Prices range from 20,000 to 40,000 euros per cabin, depending on the itinerary. The 'Scenic Eclipse's last route started in Lisbon and will end in Dublin, passing through Vigo, Ferrol, Bordeaux, and other high-end ports. Most passengers are North American, but availability for any luxury lover is real and bookings can be made through specialized agencies and portals such as Emeraldspanic.com.

Where to find information and book luxury cruises

Specialized websites and agencies

If the idea of a cruise where the submarine and helicopters are part of daily life seduces you, portals like Emeraldspanic.com offer updated information, itineraries, bookings, and service details. Luxury cruise lines like 'Scenic Cruises' provide access to exclusive experiences with personalized attention and select routes.

Routes, prices, and services within reach

Besides the 'Scenic Eclipse,' there are more options to enjoy trips combining nature, adventure, and luxury. In fact, there are more affordable routes that are also spectacular journeys.
A small, almost unknown village that holds a natural treasure you wouldn’t expect so close to Valencia. Benilloba, with fewer than 800 inhabitants, seems to have stayed frozen in time. But, oh, it hides a secret that precisely makes it irresistible, especially for lovers of hiking and nature in its purest form.

Located in the province of Alicante, within the Valencian Community, and just an hour and twenty minutes from Valencia, this place combines mountain landscapes and historical heritage in a way few villages can boast. Its fame? A waterfall that leaves even the most demanding tourist speechless.

Benilloba, the village that defies size with its nature

The Salt Waterfall and the Mill of the Rocks

Benilloba is best known for the Route to the Salt Mill, which leads directly to the Mill of the Rocks of Salt, an old mill from 1852 that ended up becoming a hydroelectric plant (Factory of Light) that still retains the charm of another era. But the absolute star is the Benilloba Waterfall, a spectacular waterfall born from the Penàguila River that attracts visitors from all over the Valencian Community and beyond.

Salt Mill - Inauguration and Blessing of the Factory of Light, 1902. Photo from Wikimedia Commons.

To get there you must pass by the Teulería Fountain, and don’t worry if the descent scares you: a stone staircase makes access easier, making it accessible to almost everyone, even those not trained for mountain hiking.

If you want to prepare a good route from Benilloba village to this mill, passing by fountains and spectacular spots, we recommend this Wikiloc route, posted by user Mike K Six, but plan the route well and prepare properly while observing the weather.

A natural environment to explore

Around Benilloba, the Aitana Mountain Range stands out strongly and offers a landscape that looks like it came from a postcard. Here you can take hiking routes that connect with other well-known mountain ranges like Puig Campana and the Sierra de Mariola.

Also, it’s not just mountains: less than 100 km away, there is a coastline with more than 200 km of beaches and coves with crystal-clear waters that become a summer temptation for visitors, combining the best of mountain and coast in a getaway that requires no long travel.

How to get to Benilloba from Valencia

A direct and easy route by road

From Tarragona, it’s about a 4-hour drive, taking the AP-7 down until you reach Valencia. Taking the A-7 route is the most comfortable and fastest way to travel from Valencia to Benilloba. In a little over an hour and twenty minutes, you will cover approximately 98 km from the center of Valencia to the village, passing through well-signposted roads with landscapes that already prepare the traveler for the experience ahead.

The route goes along C. de les Filipines and Av. d'Ausiàs March to the V-3 and then joins the A-7. Once at exit 442, just follow Carrer Tapia, where the Benilloba adventure begins.

Public transport and alternatives

Although there are some bus connections, public transport is not exactly the best option to get there. The recommendation is to go by car, so you can enjoy the journey and stop at points of interest you find along the way.

For those seeking more adventure, the cycling routes surrounding the area are an added attraction. But beware, the climbs are relentless.

What to do, eat, and where to stay in Benilloba and surroundings

Enjoy local dishes and the gastronomic culture

Benilloba, like the entire Alicante territory, does not fall short in gastronomy. The bean stew with turnips and meat is a classic you can’t miss. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, their traditional sweet potato cake is a delight that will make you come back for more.

For meals, the village has some family-run restaurants where homemade cooking reigns, such as Bar Nou, a simple place with authentic flavor, highly valued by locals and visitors seeking authenticity.

Charming accommodation to complete the visit

The village offers lodging in rural houses and small inns that maintain the place’s peaceful and welcoming character. For example, Casa Rural El Portalet is a highly recommended option for those who want to rest after a day of hiking and discover the village at a relaxed pace.

If you want a fuller experience, you can combine the visit with a stay in the city of Alcoy, just 20 km away, which has more hotel options and a pleasant urban atmosphere.

Other places to visit nearby

If you crave more, the Mariola Mountain Range, with its small villages and routes, is very close. You can also visit Alcoy, with its modernist and industrial heritage, or make a getaway to the beaches of the Costa Blanca, less than an hour away by road.

This contrast between mountain and sea makes Benilloba ideal for weekend getaways or a few days of total relaxation.

The reality is that Benilloba is not just any village; it is a place where nature, history, and daily life blend with a charm that makes you come back, even if just to see the Benilloba Waterfall again.

The narrowest street in Barcelona is not just a play of spaces and dimensions, but a small universe full of curiosities that almost go unnoticed by the eyes of locals and visitors alike. What hides behind this passageway that could be the perfect setting for a suspense movie? A story that will make you look twice the next time you cross it.

Located near the Gothic Quarter, Carrer de les Mosques stands out for its minimal width, which does not reach 80 centimeters at some points. According to data from the Municipal Archive and urban history experts, this street has survived centuries of urban transformations with a strongly marked personality. But what makes it so special? Not just its size, but the atmosphere it breathes, between shadows and lights that invite you to get lost.

Carrer de les Mosques: a little piece of history and urbanism in Barcelona

Origin and curiosities

The name is already a statement of intent: mosques (flies). According to historical sources, this word is related to the presence of this insect in that area centuries ago, when the neighborhood was still a maze of narrow streets and stone houses. But there are also those who think the name could come from a corruption of the term 'moscatell', a type of wine that was sold nearby, or even an old popular expression related to the narrowness of the street.

Either way, this street has been the subject of study and admiration by architects and urban planners who consider it an extreme example of medieval Barcelona urbanism, where every centimeter counted and space was a luxury.

Its location and surroundings

Just a few steps from the cathedral and Sant Felip Neri square, Carrer de les Mosques ventures into a labyrinth of streets that preserve the old essence of the city. Walking here is to step back in time, with the sound of suitcase wheels hitting the cobblestones and some scent of aromas coming from the small hidden restaurants in these corners.

One of the hidden gems is the proximity to emblematic places like Plaça del Rei or Plaça de Sant Jaume, but with a much more intimate and less touristy feeling. Here, the pace seems slower, almost as if the street breathed to a different rhythm.

How to get there and what to do in the area

The best way to discover the street

Come on foot or by public transport; the Gothic Quarter is accessible from several metro and bus lines. But beware, Carrer de les Mosques is not a place for cars or hurried tourists: it is a space to get lost and let yourself be carried away.

Locals recommend arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy the silence surrounding this tiny space. Local guides explain that many anecdotes and stories are kept at every corner, from urban legends to small family businesses that still maintain the essence of decades ago.

What to taste around

Gastronomy is another attraction of the area. Just a few meters away you will find restaurants with daily menus offering traditional Catalan dishes

But the most recommended thing is to follow the smells and sounds, enter a small tavern, and order a strong coffee while observing the life of the neighborhood that seems frozen in time.

And if you want to discover more places like this, hidden restaurants, free museums, and different plans in the Catalan capital, @elenamanukhina, on her Instagram profile invites us to comment the word "GUIDE" and she will send us an amazing guide to Barcelona’s most secret spots.

Everyday life and local curiosities

A window to the past and the present

Despite its size, Carrer de les Mosques is a living testimony of how Barcelona has evolved, maintaining its personality between modernity and tradition. Neighbors say that often conversations are heard in different languages, but the most usual noise is the buzz of some fly that seems to want to remind you of the street’s name.

A local historian, Joan Soler, commented in 2023 that "these small streets tell the real story of Barcelona, not the big avenues". And he is right.

Reactions and curiosities of those who visit it

Tourists who arrive are often surprised by the extremely tight space and the almost claustrophobic feeling it creates. It’s like entering a secret world, an unknown Barcelona that almost no one tells about. And this, in the 21st century, is a privilege that must be experienced at least once.

According to a local tour guide in 2024, "Carrer de les Mosques is proof that size isn’t always synonymous with importance. Sometimes the smallest hides the biggest".

The truth is, if you are looking for a different experience with a touch of authenticity, this street is a must-stop on your route through Barcelona. And if afterwards you stop for a homemade menu dinner nearby, even better.

And so, among stories of flies, narrow streets, and the smell of paella from the menu, Barcelona remains the city that never stops surprising, even in its tiniest and most hidden corners.

The Etruscan civilization is one of the great unknowns that preceded and coexisted with the Roman Empire. With a rich and mysterious culture, this civilization left its mark on the Italian peninsula before disappearing, yet even today it surprises us with its stories and archaeological findings.

Among the cities that were part of this ancient world, Veii stands out as a living example of this history. Located at the northern border of the Roman metropolis, today it is a museum archaeological park offering a direct window into the past and the coexistence between Etruscans and Romans.

The Veii Archaeological Park: a journey to the lost city

The ancient sanctuary and its findings

What we know today as the Veii Archaeological Park houses emblematic sites such as the sanctuary of Apollo, also called the Portonaccio sanctuary, one of the most monumental and revered in Etruria. This area, discovered in 1916, revealed terracotta statues of Apollo, Hermes, and Heracles that decorated the temple. This find not only captivated experts but still today illustrates the religious and cultural importance of the site.

The Etruscan city and its historical evolution

Veii was a city with an active presence from the 7th century BC until the 2nd century BC, when it became integrated into the Roman sphere. Recently, an archaeological study has changed the traditional view that Veii was a failure during the Roman era, presenting it as an example of community resilience and adaptation. This adds a new dimension to its history and motivates a visit to see firsthand this witness of the past.

The remains of the ancient Etruscan city of Veii are located near Isola Farnese, on a triangular plateau surrounded by the Fosso della Mola and Cremèra rivers. The site was already inhabited in the Bronze Age and Villanovan period, but it grew mainly thanks to control of the lower Tiber, exploitation of saltworks, and intense trade with Greek merchants.

Between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, Veii transformed into an important city, with walls made of tuff blocks and masonry houses. Its proximity to Rome, only 17 kilometers away, caused an inevitable rivalry for territorial control, which ended with the Roman conquest in 396 BC by Furius Camillus. Later, the territory was reorganized with farms, rural villas, and, during the time of Caesar and Augustus, a new colony turned into a municipality.

The city was surrounded by numerous necropolises with tumuli and chamber tombs, some of great archaeological value. Highlights include the Tomb of the Ducks, considered the oldest Etruscan tomb with mural paintings, and the Campana Tomb, decorated with animals, vegetal motifs, riders, and fantastic figures. These funerary spaces have provided essential objects for understanding Etruscan culture.

One of the most notable points of Veii is the Portonaccio sanctuary, famous for the terracotta statue of Apollo, now preserved at the Villa Giulia Museum. The temple, decorated with rich terracotta pieces attributed to the workshop of Vulca, worshiped Minerva and Apollo. Veii also stands out for its underground engineering system, especially the Ponte Sodo, a gallery about 70 meters long that helped channel the flooding of the Cremèra river.

What to visit and enjoy in the Veii area

Itineraries and archaeological landscapes

In addition to the sanctuary, the area is surrounded by a natural park that invites hiking and contemplation. The paths of the Veii Regional Park connect several archaeological points and offer a landscape full of history and nature, an ideal setting for heritage lovers and tranquility seekers.

What to see near Veii

Isola Farnese: a charming small village near the park, with a castle and narrow stone streets.

Formello: a neighboring municipality with a medieval historic center and the Palazzo Chigi, which often hosts exhibitions.

Veii waterfalls: hiking routes leading to small waterfalls within the protected natural area.

Nearby gastronomy and accommodation

After strolling among ruins, the local gastronomy surprises with traditional Roman and Etruscan dishes reinvented, with local ingredients and recipes evoking the past. In the area, small hotels and rural houses allow for a comfortable and authentic stay, perfect for those who want to escape tourist crowds.

What to eat in the area

The gastronomy of this area north of Rome is typical of Lazio, based on local products and homestyle cooking.

Trattorias in Isola Farnese and Formello: look for rustic restaurants offering traditional pastas with typical sauces such as Amatriciana, Carbonara, or Cacio e Pepe.

Local specialties: wines from the area, especially white wine production, artisanal cured meats, and grilled meats.

The best way to enjoy it is to combine a morning visit to the archaeological park with lunch at one of the family-run restaurants in Isola Farnese before strolling through the village.

How to get to Veii from Tarragona

Transport options

To get to Veii from Tarragona, the most common route is to fly or take a train to Rome, from where public transport or rental car can be used to reach the Archaeological Park. A train and bus combination is feasible, although it is recommended to plan well, as connections may be limited and the park is in a protected area requiring walking to access it.

If you want to go on your own, you can choose to go by car. From Tarragona, it takes about 15 hours by road, but you can spend the night in Marseille or Monaco and continue your journey passing through Genoa, Florence, and all the way down to Rome.

Practical recommendations

The park opens with free access and no reservation needed, although it may be affected by occasional closures due to landslides or maintenance, so it is advisable to check beforehand. The visit is ideal in spring and autumn, when the weather is favorable and the landscape more pleasant.

The reality is that Veii is not just another archaeological site: it is a living testimony of a civilization that knew how to adapt and leave a mark that still speaks to us today. Visiting the Etruscan city of Veii is a stroll through history and nature, with a touch of mystery that only places with a true past can offer.

Well, that is exactly what happened to a tourist who traveled to Egypt. But you should know that a sick leave for anxiety does not prevent traveling if it is therapeutic. Find out what the Justice says and how to protect yourself against dismissal.

Being on medical leave and facing restrictions to take a planned trip. This contradiction is more common than it seems and can cause more than one unexpected headache.

A recent case at the High Court of Justice of Cantabria shows that traveling during medical leave for anxiety is not always a reason for dismissal, especially if the trip is authorized by medical professionals and is part of the treatment.

8 ways to travel more sustainably

The case of the trip to Egypt during medical leave for anxiety

A sales representative requested vacation to make a trip to Egypt, scheduled from November 2 to 13, 2006, but the company denied the permission. The surprise came when, already on leave for a mixed adjustment disorder, he decided to make the trip anyway, including visits to the pyramids.

Nevertheless, his leave and the trip were backed by his primary care physician, who considered that the trip was part of the therapeutic plan for his recovery. Moreover, the Medical Inspection of Santander authorized him to leave the province during the medical leave.

The company’s and Justice’s response

The company reacted with a disciplinary dismissal for alleged breach of contractual good faith. But the High Court of Justice of Cantabria declared this dismissal unfair, as no serious or culpable breach was demonstrated, and the trip did not delay recovery.

When traveling during medical leave is not a work-related offense

The court made it clear that being on medical leave does not mean staying at home doing nothing. If the trip or activity does not harm recovery or contradict the temporary incapacity, it cannot be used to justify a dismissal.

What can you actually do when you are on medical leave?

The worker’s legal limits on medical leave

Medical leave, especially when it is for psychological reasons like anxiety, involves following treatment and avoiding activities that harm recovery. But it does not require absolute confinement.

Health authorities allow leisure activities compatible with healing, and even traveling if authorized by doctors and medical inspections. Having this authorization is key to avoid legal problems.

What is not allowed?

Engaging in activities that contradict the diagnosis or treatment.

Performing unauthorized work or labor activities.

Living a normal life that contradicts the temporary incapacity.

Practical advice if you travel during medical leave

Before leaving

Always consult your primary care doctor and, if necessary, request authorization from the Medical Inspection.

Communicate transparently to the company any planned trip or activity.

Keep all medical documentation and authorizations for possible claims.

If you receive a warning or dismissal

Do not give up. Take legal action if you believe the dismissal is unjust. The Egypt case shows that justice can side with the worker when medical and legal requirements are met.

Discuss your case with a labor lawyer who knows the regulations and precedents well.

The trip to Egypt during medical leave for anxiety not only tested the boundary between labor law and health but also made clear that the workplace is not as immovable a space as it seems when mental health is involved.

It’s not just any park. The Sámano Mythological Park has a well-defined personality that not everyone knows how to appreciate at first glance.

Located in Castro Urdiales, on the Cantabrian coast, this park opened its doors a few years ago but has already sparked curiosity and controversy among locals and visitors. The giant sculptures of creatures like the Ojáncano or the bogeyman catch the eye for their details and originality. But not everything is as idyllic as it looks in the photo, in this sculptural park of Cantabrian mythology.

History and origins of the Sámano Mythological Park

How did this mythological adventure begin?

The park was conceived as a way to revitalize the area and recover the richness of local folklore. From legendary figures like the anjana, the trenti, or the caballucu del diablo, a route was created that combines art and nature. The goal, according to the promoters, is for visitors to immerse themselves in Cantabrian popular culture in a different way.

Anecdotes not found in the guide

They say that some sculptures have had problems with wind and humidity, and that the 3,800-kilo roblón almost got stuck in an area of the forest. It is also said that the musgosu, with his flute and turtle, is the children's favorite because it seems to move when you’re not looking. And some even claim to have heard the culebre hiss when the sun sets... A whole world to discover with a bit of magic and an enchanted forest atmosphere.

Hours, gastronomy, and accommodation near the park

When and how to visit the park?

The Sámano Mythological Park is open every day, usually from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer, with shorter hours in winter. The entrance fee is around 7 euros per person, ideal for spending an unusual afternoon with family or friends. Comfortable shoes are a must, as the route is about 3 kilometers along trails between trees and sculptures.

Places to eat and sleep nearby

Just minutes from the park, Castro Urdiales offers several culinary options, from fresh fish menus to more classic tapas. The port and the old town are good spots to taste local cuisine, especially the famous daily menu paella. If you want to stay overnight, there are boutique hotels and charming inns that won’t leave you indifferent.

How to get there from Tarragona and what to visit nearby

Transport options

From Tarragona, the easiest way is to take the train to Bilbao and then a bus or rental car to Castro Urdiales, a total journey of about 7 hours. Those who prefer to fly can land at Bilbao airport and from there make the land connection. That said, prepare for a trip that’s not exactly express, but worth it for the experience. And if you’re someone who keeps your car glued to your behind, get ready for almost six hours of travel, but you’ll go at your own pace, taking the AP-2, the AP-68 from Zaragoza, and the final stretch on the AP-8. It’s straightforward, I assure you.

Check out this route recorded by 'xXPABLERASXx' on his YouTube channel. Show it to your family and you can start packing because they won’t want to miss it.

Other places of interest in the area

If you’re already in the area, you can’t miss visiting the Santa Ana castle, with spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea, nor the famous Castro lighthouse, sharply contrasting with the navy blue sea. It’s also recommended to take a walk along the coastal path to the cliffs, where the sirenuca seems to watch from the rocks. All in all, a getaway that combines nature, culture, and a touch of mystery.

If you’re interested in all this, here is a link to an article that explains these mythological characters quite well. We also recommend a visit to the Cantabria Mythology Interpretation Center, in Anievas, about an hour and fifteen minutes from Castro Urdiales, via the A-8 and A-67 (without reaching Santander), to complete a well-rounded thematic trip.

If you thought legends were only for reading, this park will make you change your mind, and who knows, you might end up chatting with a cuin or a trenti without even realizing it.

There are places that seem to have been trapped in time, but not out of nostalgia, rather because of their imposing presence full of secrets. What happens when a castle that witnessed so many stories still retains the smell of gunpowder and the shadows of its former prisoners? The Castle of La Mota in Medina del Campo is that and much more.

Located just 15 minutes from an ancient 12th-century convent converted into a spa, this castle stands out not only for its Mudéjar architecture but also for the multiple historical phases it has experienced. According to the Joaquín Díaz Foundation, it is one of the most emblematic sites in the province of Valladolid and one of the most advanced artillery castles in Europe in the 15th century.

The Castle of La Mota: history and Mudéjar exterior

🌡️ Climate: Spring and autumn, 10-25 ºC
✈️ How to get there: Valladolid Airport, 60 minutes by car
📅 Best time: Easter week and summer for cultural activities

History in one place

The castle stands on a mota, a natural elevation of the Castilian plateau, which was already occupied in the Iron Age. Its name comes from this very hill, and from the 11th century, during the Reconquista, the fortress we know today began to take shape. Juan II of Castile, Enrique IV, and the Catholic Monarchs transformed the castle, turning it into the most advanced artillery fortress in Europe at the time.

Figures such as Juana la Loca and César Borgia passed through these walls, and Isabel the Catholic spent her last days here. It is not just any castle; it is a place where history is written in every stone.

Exterior and Mudéjar architecture

What first catches your attention when you arrive at the castle is its pink concrete and brick barbican, built to withstand projectiles and catapults. The two cylindrical towers that stand out have a clear defensive function but also a charm that seems to let out an ancient moan.

Walking around its perimeter, surrounding the moat, is like touching medieval grandeur. The preservation is excellent, and although the castle is partially reconstructed, its majestic appearance has not lost any of its aura.

Visiting the castle: experiences and schedules

Visit options

There are several ways to discover the castle, depending on how much time you want to invest and your interest in the hidden stories. The free visit is free, but only allows access to the exterior, the parade ground, the chapel, and Juan de la Cosa’s room. If you want more, the audio guide for €4.50 explains the walls and the archaeological site, although without access to the underground areas or the tower.

The guided tour without the tower costs €5 and adds entry to the underground galleries plus a more complete explanation. The tour with the tower, for €9, is the most complete: you will climb the five floors of the Keep Tower and enjoy the views from the Knight's Lookout.

Schedules and reservations

The castle is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 (until 18:00 in winter), and on Sundays only in the morning. Guided visits require prior reservation through the center’s official phone or email.

If you are unfortunate not to have transport from Valladolid, the most practical option is to rent a car and take advantage of a wine route through the Denominations of Origin in the area, a way to combine culture, landscape, and local gastronomy.

From the YouTube channel 'Walking Spain,' we get a small guided tour so we can see the majesty of this medieval fortress. Don’t watch this video if you don’t want an uncontrollable urge to visit it!

What to see and do around the Castle of La Mota?

Gastronomy and accommodation

If you’re hungry after the visit, you can stop at Monaco 1962, a classic on the main square of Medina del Campo with affordable menus ideal for families. For a more authentic experience, Bodega Campo Eliseo in La Seca offers traditional menus and tastings, but reservations are required.

If night falls, Asador El Caballero de Olmedo is a place that combines history and good cuisine, located in an old convent. And if your base is Valladolid, don’t miss the tapas route, a local classic that never disappoints.

Recommended accommodation

To stay nearby, Castilla Termal Balneario d'Olmedo is a spectacular option, with a 12th-century convent converted into a spa with thermal waters and an outdoor pool. If you want a more economical option, Hotel Reina Isabel in Medina del Campo is practical and well located.

With this combo of culture and rest, visiting the Castle of La Mota becomes a perfectly accessible getaway from Camp de Tarragona.

By the way, did you know that the Duke of Alba almost destroyed the castle? But he eventually gifted it as a tribute to Ferdinand and Isabella in 1475. Now that’s a historic change of plans.

If you’re looking for a place to breathe stones charged with legends and see up close the echoes of Isabel the Catholic and Juana la Loca, this castle will not leave you indifferent.

Discover the 24th Trementinaires Festival in Tuixent, its history, how to get there from Tarragona, where to eat, and what to visit.

Tuixent awakens every spring with a special atmosphere. It is not just another village in Alt Urgell, but the heart of a tradition that still smells of herbs and mountains.

The 24th Trementinaires Festival attracts the curious and nostalgic who want to learn the story of these women who came down from the mountains to sell remedies, and enjoy a getaway with landscapes that won’t make you think of Switzerland, but almost. If you feel like going, this year it will be held on May 29, 30, and 31. Click on the official poster to see the event program.

How to get to Tuixent from Tarragona

Route and transport

Leaving Tarragona by car towards Alt Urgell is a trip that takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. The fastest route is to take the C-14 towards La Seu d'Urgell, up to Coll de Nargó, and from there continue on the LV-4014 which leads directly to Tuixent.

If the car is not your ally, there are combined options with buses connecting to La Seu d'Urgell and small taxis or local services to Tuixent, although it is not a trip for those in a hurry.

Practical tips

Before taking the car, check the road conditions. Although it’s spring, there may still be some ice. In summer, the road offers spectacular views and fresh air that makes you forget you have been stuck on the C-14 for an hour.

The history of the trementinaires and the traditional festival

Who were the trementinaires?

The trementinaires were brave women who gathered medicinal herbs from the Cadí mountain range, prepared remedies, and went down to the plain to sell them. It was not an easy job: they walked kilometers with baskets full of natural shops. Their name comes from turpentine oil, a product they used as a base for their remedies.

Image of the Trementinaires Museum, in Tuixent.

Thanks to them, popular medicine and rural memory still live on in Tuixent. The Trementinaires Museum, inaugurated in 1998 and directed by Lina Sevillano, tells this story with objects, oral testimonies, and millenary rituals.

The Trementinaires Festival and Fair

Every May, the town dresses up to host the Trementinaires Festival and Fair, which in 2024 celebrates its 24th edition. It’s not just a product fair; it’s a tribute to tradition, with herb stalls, workshops, gastronomy, and music that make you not want to leave.

The fair attracts visitors from all over Catalonia looking for a touch of authenticity and a good dose of uncomplicated nature.

Where to eat and stay in Tuixent

Restaurants and local cuisine

Tuixent does not disappoint when it comes to sitting at the table. There are everything from small family restaurants to inns with traditional cuisine, where lamb, river trout, and mountain potatoes take center stage. The daily menu costs around 15-20 euros, a fair price for a meal that won’t leave you hungry.

If you want to add the cherry on top, try the artisanal cheese from the area, often accompanied by good country bread and a wine from nearby Cerdanya.

Accommodation for all tastes

Tuixent offers everything from charming hostels to small rural hotels and holiday rental homes. Like the fair, this village keeps things simple: you won’t find big resorts here, but places with personality and that homey atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

Book in advance if you want to coincide with the festival, as the places fill up quickly.

What to visit in Tuixent and surroundings

Trementinaires Museum

The museum is a must-stop. There Lina Sevillano and the team will tell you everything you need to know about the trementinaires, the plants, the remedies, and the routes they took. Among replicas of 19th-century kitchens and traditional tools, you will understand what life was like for these women.

The museum also organizes activities during the fair and guided tours for those who want to feel the living memory.

And if you’re one of the curious who likes to have more information about the things you have to visit, from Modernet we recommend you read this interesting ethnographic book about the Trementinaires. Read it now by clicking the cover link.

<img alt="Women Who Went Around the World.
Other points of interest

The village itself is a treasure. Walk through its cobbled streets and keep an eye on the 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Esteve, with a bell tower that seems to watch over the valley. Around it, nature is pure poetry: forests of red pine, oak, and fir, and the Vall de la Vansa with its scattered farmhouses.

For the more active, the path from Josa de Cadí to Tuixent is an easy route that can make you feel the heart of Catalan tradition as you cross bridges over the Josa river and enjoy panoramas that don’t fall into the typical postcard cliché.

Tuixent does not promise great luxuries, but it does offer a breath of fresh air and a leap back to a time when the essential was what nature offered you.

If you’re looking for a getaway that won’t make you sweat but will clear your head, the Trementinaires Festival is the perfect excuse to make the trip.

Andorra has ceased to be that quiet destination for hikers who only had to worry about the slope or the lack of mobile coverage. This spring, three young brown bears have made an appearance in the Principality, reminding us that nature is not just selfies and panoramic views.

According to the Andorran Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Guillem Casal, these bears have been moving through usual incursion areas, and the Andorran banders corps has already shared recommendations for those who encounter them. So, in addition to sunscreen and proper boots, it might be wise to add a bit of common sense and patience if you see a bear on the horizon.

Must-do hiking routes in Andorra

Comapedrosa Trail

A classic that never fails: the path to Andorra’s highest peak, Comapedrosa (2,942 m). With views that will leave you breathless (literally, because the climb is no joke), it’s a route of approximately 4-5 hours round trip. It’s not uncommon to come across bear tracks in the higher areas, but don’t worry, these bears are shyer than Instagrammers in front of a viewpoint.

Tristaina Lakes itinerary

For those who prefer water landscapes and less elevation gain, this circular route around the glacial lakes is a pleasure for the senses. About 5 km and around 2 hours, it’s ideal for families and keeping an eye out for possible unexpected visits from wildlife.

Guide for coexistence with bears if we go hiking in the mountains and encounter them.

Check out the interesting advice video edited by the Government of Andorra and the Brown Bear Foundation, published by the Andorran Banders Corps. These tips will be useful whether you are going to Andorra or hiking in trails of the Catalan Pyrenees, where the presence of bears is also starting to increase.

Where to stay after a hike with ‘unexpected company’

Hotels, charming rural houses, and bordes

Andorra offers a surprising range of accommodations combining comfort and authenticity. From rural houses in the Ordino valley to boutique hotels in the capital, you will find places to regain your strength and, who knows, maybe feel like a local farmer for a night. You can also opt for bordes and rural houses in the truest high mountain style.

Mountain refuges

For the more adventurous, refuges like Illa or Amitges (see the guide on this page) are strategic points for two-stage hikes. Although they’re not luxury places, their simplicity and proximity to nature will remind you that the essential is invisible to the eyes... and to bears.

Gastronomy and precautions: eat well and be careful

Mountain menus worth trying

After a good hike, nothing beats a daily menu with typical Andorran dishes: trinxat, escudella, or artisanal cheeses. In Andorra la Vella and Escaldes you will find restaurants that combine tradition with a modern touch, to recharge without overdoing it.

How to act if you encounter a brown bear

The Andorran banders corps and the Andorran minister agree on basic recommendations: stay calm, don’t run, and walk away facing the animal without turning your back. Give space for the bear to flee and avoid loud noises—these are key to avoiding uncomfortable situations.

The reality is that these bears don’t look for conflict and usually move away when they sense human presence. So, more than fear, what’s needed is respect and a bit of humor when you tell at the restaurant table about that “bare” encounter with the bear.

Hiking, good food, and a bit of animal respect: the perfect combination to enjoy Andorra without unpleasant surprises. And if the bear appears, remember it’s not an influencer looking for a photo, but a mountain neighbor who deserves respect.

Origen i transmissió

Fes servir gels hidroalcohòlics i renta’t bé les mans força sovint.

Comunica immediatament qualsevol símptoma al personal mèdic del vaixell.

Evita aglomeracions i espais tancats si no és necessari.

Barcelona hides a secret language in its streets. Many pass by without noticing, but the city speaks through small details that tell stories from centuries ago.

Although we really like everything there is in Tarragona, Reus, Valls, El Vendrell, Tortosa, Amposta... If you want to take a different getaway, a route through the symbols of the Born and the Gothic Quarter is an option you cannot miss. These stone signs guided sailors when digital maps didn’t exist yet.

How to get to Barcelona from the Camp de Tarragona

Transport options

Getting to Barcelona from Tarragona is easy. You can take the AVE or the regional train that connects directly to Barcelona Sants station in less than an hour (unless there is an unexpected issue, and lately it’s like a lottery). There are also intercity buses covering the route for a more affordable price.

Getting around the center

Once in Barcelona, the best way to move around is on foot in the Born and Gothic Quarter areas. The streets are narrow and full of corners to discover at a relaxed pace. Using the metro or bus can help get you quickly around, but the magic is found by walking.

The symbols of the Born and the Gothic Quarter: what they are and why they exist

The system of signs to guide sailors, citizens, and strangers

Centuries ago, when most people couldn’t read, Barcelona created a visual code painted on facades to help sailors arriving at the port. These marks were stone faces, branches, and other details indicating where to find food, drink, and entertainment.

One of the so-called "faces" on a corner of a building in Barcelona. These figures indicated, in the 17th century, the location of a brothel in that spot.

The details still visible today

The most surprising thing is that many of these symbols remain intact! Walking through the Born or the Gothic Quarter, you just need to look up to discover the history that Barcelona silently tells to those who know how to look.

What to visit and where to eat near the Born and the Gothic Quarter

Must-see places to complete the route

The Born Market: a historic space with archaeological remains and a cultural center.

Plaça Sant Jaume: the political heart of the city with the City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat.

The Picasso Museum: nearby, for art lovers.

Plaça del Rei. Located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. For centuries it was the seat of comital royal power in the city.

You can take a walk through these places by following this Wikiloc route:

Gastronomy and accommodation

The Born has an excellent gastronomic offer. Try the tapas at El Xampanyet or a good plate of paella at La Paradeta. If you want to stay overnight, you will find charming hotels and boutique hostels that capture the essence of the neighborhood.

A getaway that combines culture, history, and gastronomy. And who knows, maybe next time you go to Barcelona you’ll look at the facades with different eyes.

The reality is that Barcelona keeps talking, you just have to know how to listen, or have someone tell you the secrets hidden in plain sight.

There are days when the need to escape urban noise becomes irresistible, but you don’t always have to go far. A weekend getaway can offer pleasantly refreshing surprises without complications.

The hidden waterfalls of Vallfogona de Ripollès are a secret that still holds the calm of an almost untouched nature, and this less than two hours from Tarragona, right in the heart of the Ripollès region.

A family route among unexpected waterfalls

🌡️ Climate: Spring and summer, 15-25 ºC
✈️ How to get there: Car from Tarragona via C-17 and local road (1h40 min)
📅 Best time: April to June for waterfalls full of water

The path and the secret of the Font de la Tosca

The starting point is the medieval nucleus of Vallfogona de Ripollès. This town not only offers a walk through cobbled streets and stone houses, but also serves as the entrance to a circular route just over 4 km, perfect for the whole family.

The main attraction is the Font de la Tosca, a travertine spring where water sculpts the rock with centuries of patience. Around it, nature opens up with humid forests and small waterfalls that look like they came out of a fairy tale.

Walkways, waterfalls, and pools to discover

The route continues along wooden walkways that cross the Torrent de la Masica, a forest that hides pools as photogenic as the Upper Pool and the Lower Pool. The waterfalls of the Costa de Llastanosa are another attraction point where you can stop to enjoy the sound of water and fresh air.

The trail is accessible, with gentle slopes and well signposted, ideal for children and people who want an easy walk. You can follow this circular route we recommend, from Vallfogona de Ripollès to the Font.

How to prepare the outing and what to see nearby

Basic recommendations

Before leaving, it is advisable to bring comfortable footwear and water. Free parking is located at the sports area of Vallfogona, where you can also stay overnight with a campervan or tent.

Respecting nature is key: do not leave marked paths and do not leave any waste. You can also visit the old Solà i Cortal refuge, with rural charm and forestry history.

Other visits and local cuisine

Nearby, the municipality of Ripoll offers outstanding Romanesque heritage with its monastery and local markets. To eat, the farmhouses and restaurants in the area serve traditional dishes like trinxat or botifarra with beans (sausage with beans, as known by the people of Camp de Tarragona), ideal after the walk.

Regarding accommodation, there are rural houses and small hotels that maintain the essence of Ripollès, with a family atmosphere and a peaceful environment.

How to get there from Tarragona

By car route

From Tarragona, take the C-17 road towards Vic and Ripoll. Upon arriving in Ripoll, follow the signs for the local road to Vallfogona de Ripollès. The journey lasts approximately 2 and a half hours, depending on traffic.

Public transport

Although the best option is by car, you can also combine train to Ripoll and taxi or local bus to Vallfogona. But be careful: schedules are not very frequent and planning in advance is necessary.

Enjoying this getaway means having at hand a place where nature and history meet without complicating life or making unnecessary kilometers. And, as always, whoever finds the Font de la Tosca will want to return.

Girona is preparing for a new wave of flowers and colors that will fill its streets, with a festival that not only looks beautiful, but also aims to make people think. This year’s edition adds more spaces and a clear commitment to inclusivity, while visitors immerse themselves in a route filled with culture, history and social awareness.

From May 9 to 17, Girona will host 141 floral projects spread across 113 spaces, reaching as far as the Pont Major neighborhood and introducing the Sant Feliu bridge as one of the main new additions. The organizers are committed to an adapted, accessible experience with a program that goes far beyond simple contemplation.

Girona Temps de Flors: an experience for all the senses

🌡️ Weather: May temperatures between 15 ºC and 22 ºC
✈️ How to get there: Girona-Costa Brava Airport, train and bus connections from Tarragona
📅 Best time to visit: May, during the festival and spring bloom

The most remarkable floral spaces and projects

This year, the festival incorporates the Sant Feliu bridge as a symbolic new location, joining the classic bridges of Sant Agustí, Peixateries Velles and Gómez. The route stretches through areas such as the Barri Vell, with decorated gardens, fountains and façades, and also reaches Pont Major, where a woven wooden structure has been created as a resting and shelter area.

On the Cathedral stairs, a project coordinated by Teresa Vidal blends Girona mythology with tributes to Gaudí. The city also commemorates the 150th anniversary of Pau Casals with installations evoking peace and music at Natàlia Molero i Lloret Square and the Garden of Peace.

An open festival for everyone: accessibility and calm spaces

The exhibition reinforces accessibility with a route adapted for people with reduced mobility and two calm areas designed for neurodivergent visitors and breastfeeding women, open to anyone who may need a break. Rest areas have also been distributed throughout the route, including a dedicated space in the Garden of the Angel.

Extended opening hours allow visitors to enjoy the installations into the night thanks to the Flors de Nit initiative, offering evening visits until 11 p.m. and until midnight on Saturdays.

To get into the mood, take a look at this video summary created by Marcel·lí Miret about last year’s edition of Temps de Flors. You definitely won’t want to miss this year’s festival.

What to do in Girona beyond the festival

The origins of “Temps de Flors”

Temps de Flors began in 1954 as a small floral competition and exhibition held in the lounge of Girona’s Municipal Theatre and, over the years, has grown into one of the city’s major international festivals. Thanks to figures such as Rosa Maria Labayen, David Marca and Josep Tarrés, together with local community involvement and the opening of private courtyards, gardens and historic spaces in the Barri Vell, the event became an essential celebration blending flowers, heritage, springtime and Girona pride.

Heritage and curiosities of the city

Girona is much more than a floral backdrop. The city hides a Barri Vell filled with medieval alleyways, the Cathedral with the widest Gothic nave in the world, and the Arab Baths, which recall the Muslim period. Interestingly, Girona uses its own history and culture as part of the festival, featuring figures such as Gaudí and Pau Casals.

The sound of suitcases rolling over cobblestones and the aromas of tapas menus become part of the experience, lived intensely both day and night.

Where to eat and stay in Girona

For those wanting to enjoy local gastronomy, the city center and neighborhoods such as Mercadal offer restaurants with menus inspired by flowers and springtime. From creative tapas to traditional dishes with a modern twist, there are options for every taste.

As for accommodation, Girona offers everything from small boutique hotels —with that slightly pretentious but cozy vibe— to hostels and apartments that make you feel at home. For visitors seeking a comfortable and central stay, the Barri Vell is the best option. And if you prefer something quieter, Pont Major offers a calmer atmosphere, ideal after an intense day of sightseeing.

Organization and support: a city in motion

Who is behind the festival

The Girona City Council organizes Temps de Flors with the direct involvement of the Friends of Girona Flowers Association, which has coordinated the event for years. In 2026, BBVA, CaixaBank and Freixenet continue as sponsors, joined by REALE as a new collaborator.

This support allows the festival to expand its spaces and activities, including concerts at Plaça dels Jurats, the Girona A Cappella festival, casteller events and other cultural proposals that make the city even more vibrant.

Routes and getting around the city

To make visits easier, three itineraries have been designed connecting the main floral locations through shopping streets and green areas. This encourages visitors to rediscover Girona from a fresh and vibrant perspective, with the city dressed in its finest spring colors.

In addition, Girona’s proximity to Tarragona makes visiting Temps de Flors an easy getaway by train or car, perfect for a cultural and gastronomic weekend.

The truth is that Temps de Flors is not just a festival — it is the perfect excuse to experience Girona from a new perspective, where history, nature and culture meet in the same place.

Chef José Andrés knows this well. This Andalusian village in the province of Cádiz has caught the attention of personalities looking for a place to disconnect and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Zahara de los Atunes: a charming coastal corner

How to get there and what to visit

Zahara de los Atunes is located just over 130 km from the city of Cádiz, accessible by car via the N-340 road. From Tarragona, the trip is long but perfect for a long weekend or a more relaxed getaway. It is also possible to get there by train to Algeciras and then take a local bus to the village.

In addition to its fine sandy beaches – like the well-known Playa de los Alemanes and Playa de Atlanterra – the area offers nearby natural sites such as the Estrecho natural park and a hiking route along the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. For the more curious, the city of Algeciras, with its vibrant cultural offerings and local markets, is only 20 minutes away by car.

Local gastronomy and unique experiences

The star of the local gastronomy is the Almadrava bluefin tuna, a culinary jewel prepared in traditional but also innovative ways. The Tuna Route is an essential event to taste everything from tataki to more creative dishes using this fish. This year 2026, it is held from May 12 to 17, so there’s still time to enjoy the village, a good dish made with bluefin tuna and... to see if you can run into the great chef José Andrés and have him share one of his spectacular recipes. Oh! And if you don’t have time to go this year, we recommend the Route Games, to keep you entertained while whetting your appetite for some of these Cádiz tapas.

For dining, we recommend family-run establishments and restaurants with sea views, where you can savor not only tuna but also fresh seafood and typical Andalusian dishes. Additionally, the village offers accommodations ranging from charming small hotels to rural houses for rent, ideal for a peaceful stay.

Famous people who have chosen Zahara de los Atunes

José Andrés and his personal connection with the area

Chef José Andrés has not only bought a house in Zahara de los Atunes but also maintains a deep connection with the place. With memories of his youth in San Fernando and family ties to Algeciras, he himself highlights that waking up every morning and smelling the fresh sea air is a luxury that money cannot buy.

His decision confirms the village's appeal for people seeking a slower, nature-connected life but without giving up the quality and culinary culture that only a place like this can offer.

Other celebrities and the village atmosphere

Zahara attracts more than just the chef; figures like Rosario Flores, Dani Martín, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, and El Gran Wyoming have chosen this place to enjoy vacations. What stands out is the village’s peaceful and authentic character, far removed from the mass tourism found in other coastal destinations.

This mix of serenity and the presence of some well-known faces creates a special atmosphere that makes both visitors and residents feel at ease.

From the YouTube channel "Un sentit Spain," we get a guided tour of the town and a bit of its history. A must-watch if you travel through Cádiz or want to spend a few days there.

How to make the most of your visit to Zahara de los Atunes

Outdoor activities and beyond the beach

Besides enjoying the extensive and uncrowded beaches, the village offers hiking routes and birdwatching, thanks to its biodiversity. The mild climate most of the year allows you to explore at your own pace.

Nearby towns like Barbate and Tarifa can also be visited, offering a variety of culture, water sports, and gastronomy. Tarifa, for example, is known for its strong winds and is a paradise for lovers of kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Where to eat and stay

For food lovers, there is no better plan than to indulge in the tapas offered by local restaurants during the Tuna Route, or to try local dishes at restaurants recommended by locals, which tend to offer the best quality and more reasonable prices than the catchier tourist spots.

As for accommodation, Zahara offers options for every taste: from small boutique hotels to rural houses for vacation rental, perfect for enjoying an intimate and authentic stay with views of the sea or the surrounding fields. Pick and choose the best places to stay in Zahara on this website and hurry if you want to experience the Tuna Route event.

The truth is that Zahara de los Atunes is a well-kept secret on the Costa de la Luz, where nature, culture, and gastronomy come together to offer an unforgettable experience. If José Andrés and other celebrities have decided to make their home here, there must be a reason, right?

It is Llançà, located in Alt Empordà, a place where the Mediterranean calm is truly felt. With more than 20 beaches and coves hidden between mountains, it offers crystal-clear waters and a much more relaxed atmosphere than its more famous neighbor, Cadaqués.

How to get there and what to do in Llançà

Access and transport

Llançà is only 12 km from Cadaqués and can be easily reached by car from Girona or Figueres, with a route of about 90 minutes from Barcelona and a little over two and a half hours from Tarragona. For those who prefer public transport, there are regular bus services connecting with the main towns of Alt Empordà.

Exploring the village and natural surroundings

The old town of Llançà retains a medieval scent with white streets and a fishing atmosphere that recalls the essence of the Costa Brava. The Church of Sant Vicenç and the Chapel of Sant Silvestre are must-see points to grasp the local history.

But nature is not left behind. Llançà is surrounded by the Cap de Creus Natural Park and the Albera area, which offer hiking and cycling routes to discover a landscape of great ecological and scenic value.

Beaches and coves to enjoy without crowds

The most outstanding beaches

With more than 20 beaches and coves, Llançà is a paradise for sea lovers looking for a less crowded place. Bramant Cove, declared a Picturesque Landscape, is especially popular for snorkeling and other sports activities.

Other coves like Farella or Port Beach offer wide spaces, with clean waters and a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with the saturation of other areas of the Costa Brava.

Activities and water sports

Water lovers will find Llançà the perfect setting for activities such as kayaking, paddle surfing and, as already mentioned, snorkeling. In addition, the proximity to the Natural Park facilitates combined sea and mountain excursions.

If you prefer a bit more action, there are several centers offering equipment rental and classes for all ages and levels.

Where to eat and stay in Llançà

Local gastronomy

Llançà is a village with a gastronomic offer that reflects its fishing tradition. Local restaurants stand out for serving fresh fish and seafood just caught, with traditional dishes like fish stew or fideuà.

To make it all more authentic, we recommend trying the daily menu at one of the small restaurants in the old town, where the quality-price ratio is usually excellent.

Accommodation and tips

The village offers a variety of accommodations, from family hotels to rural houses and tourist apartments. For a more intimate experience, hostels and guesthouses in the historic center are a safe bet. Don’t delay if you want to spend a few days there, as the weather is starting to get nice and hotel bookings fill up. You can see the accommodation options on this website.

A tip that never fails: book in advance if you want to avoid surprises during the summer months, especially July and August, when the Costa Brava is full, although Llançà is quieter.

In short, Llançà combines Mediterranean beauty with the tranquility that many seek but rarely find on the Costa Brava. A village that, close to Cadaqués, lets you enjoy the best without the crowds.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live inside a castle? Well, in the province of Cádiz, there is still a place where this fantasy is reality: a town that not only embraces history but lives it on every corner.

Situated at 248 meters high, this town is part of a fortress that seems to come from another era, with cobblestone streets and houses that blend into the walls. It is an ideal setting for any lover of cultural tourism and places with their own personality.

Castellar de la Frontera: the town inside a medieval castle

🌡️ Climate: Mild Mediterranean, spring and autumn with temperatures between 15-25 ºC
💶 Currency: Euro, approximate daily budget 50€ if you are practical
✈️ How to get there: Jerez or Gibraltar Airport, by car (approx. 1 hour from Cádiz)
📅 Best time to visit: From March to June and September-October, to avoid heat and tourist crowds

A castle that is a town and a town that is heritage

Castellar is divided into two nuclei: the old one, which lives inside the walls of the Castle of Castellar, and the new one, created in 1971. The old part is the jewel of the town: a 13th-century Arab castle declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with an irregular structure and defenses such as towers and barbicans that still captivate.

The white streets, hidden squares, and the Tower of the Homage surround the daily life of the residents, who still maintain their essence despite the tourist appeal. The Baroque Church of the Divine Savior and the Palace of the Marquis of Moscoso are must-see visits.

A viewpoint with history and legend

Additionally, the town offers the famous "lovers’ balcony," a viewpoint with privileged views of the Bay of Algeciras and the Rock of Gibraltar. Here, they say, two young people swore eternal love in a story that does not end well, an Andalusian Romeo and Juliet that adds a dramatic touch to the charm of the place.

This combination of historic spaces and spectacular landscapes makes Castellar one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, according to the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of the country.

From Cádiz Tourism, they take us on a tour of the municipality of Castellar de la Frontera. Surely you will want to go there immediately.

How to get there and what to do in the area

Access and transport

The best way to get there is by car, as Castellar is near the main routes connecting Cádiz, Algeciras, and Gibraltar. The closest airport is Jerez, about 70 km away, and you can also fly to Gibraltar, less than 50 km away.

Once there, the town is perfect for walking. Leave the car in New Castellar and walk up to enjoy the route and the views.

Activities and complementary excursions

Visit the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, a cork oak forest with hiking and nature trails.

Explore the coast of the Bay of Algeciras, with uncrowded beaches and fishing villages like Tarifa.

Discover the heritage of Gibraltar, with its unique cultural blend and the famous Rock.

Where to eat and where to stay

Local gastronomy

The Campo de Gibraltar is a territory with fishing roots, so fresh fish is the star. In Castellar and surroundings, don’t miss a good brothy rice or the classic Andalusian fried seafood, accompanied by a local wine or a refreshing rebujito.

Local restaurants combine tradition with modern touches, and you will find some establishments with terraces offering spectacular views to complete your dinner.

Charming accommodation

If you want to stay overnight, New Castellar offers rural houses and small charming hotels, ideal for a quiet getaway. You can also choose accommodations in Algeciras or Tarifa, 30 minutes by car, if you prefer to be closer to the coast.

For those seeking a different experience, there are some lodging options with direct views of the castle and the old town, to feel part of history.

Castellar de la Frontera is proof that history is not always found in books or museums, but can be lived every day, among cobblestone streets and views that leave you speechless.
